Tour of Britain 2016
The Tour of Britain will return to Carlisle and Kendal this September, as Cumbria and the Lake District host the second stage of British Cycling’s premier road cycling event on Monday 5 September. Stage Two will begin in Carlisle city centre, heading through the heart of Cumbria and the Lake District and passing through Penrith, Cockermouth, Keswick and Ambleside, before the finish atop the testing 11% climb of Beast Banks in Kendal. The proposed 195-kilometre route includes the climbs of Whinlatter Pass above Derwent Water, averaging 4% over its six-kilometre length and the iconic climb of The Struggle, which will be inside the final 30-kilometres of racing, rising from Ambleside to the Kirkstone Pass at an average gradient of 8%. It will be the fourth time that Carlisle has hosted a start of the Tour of Britain, having previously hosted the race in 2005, 2012 and 2013.
We need you! With over 200 acres of land to look after we can only maintain this glorious estate with the help of volunteers. If you think you can spare a few days then we will put you up in one of our self-catering properties free of charge in exchange for five hours help per day. You can also have a day off (for good behaviour!) to enjoy the dale if you stay for five days or more! Caravanning volunteers can stay gratis on our lovely big ‘Volunteer Area’ pitch (with electric hook up/cold water tap/hard standing/chem waste disposal point) in exchange for 3 hours help per day. We’re VERY relaxed and flexible, and the work is never too onerous, usually involving outdoor jobs such as gardening, path tidying, painting… that kind of thing. All of our volunteers (thus far!) have had a great time and have come back for more. You can register interest in one of these ways: Ring Jon on 017684 82308 Use the contact page via the tab above Or email us at ‘firstname.lastname@example.org’ quoting ‘I want to be your slave, oh glorious master’. I hope to see you soon!
SPOILER ALERT: Christmas Newsletter
Warning: if you’d prefer to wait and read the printed version of this that will be flying through your letterbox very shortly, stop reading now… NEWSLETTER No. 27 Festive greetings from the heart of the Lake District! Estate Manager Jon here with your annual yuletide helping of news, gossip, hearsay and uncorroborated nonsense sent to you directly from Patterdale, scienti cally proven to be the centre of the known universe. Possibly. ‘Newsletter No 27’ is a bit dry really, I prefer to think of this as a glitteringly entertaining semi-factual info-bauble which is in many ways very much like Christmas itself – you have to wait a whole year for it to arrive and then it’s over in a ash and you’re left with a lingering sense of mild disappointment. Hurray! So buckle up for a roller-coaster ride through one of the most eventful years in estate history, and ready yourself to be amazed by our future plans to improve and develop this wonderful slice of Lake District heaven. And when I say ‘be amazed’, I mean ‘be slightly bemused’. Rather conveniently we’ve had an early cold snap, and the resulting frost and snow are glistening on Place Fell as […]
